Today, The New York Times reported that Senator Rockefeller (D-WV), chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, and Representative Waxman (D-CA), chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce would start holding meetings in June to examine how the Communications Act meets the current needs of consumers, the telecommunications industry and the Federal Communications Commission. In 2006, Former Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens famously described the internet as “a series of tubes.” The last FCC overhaul was in 1996 with the Telecommunications Act, which barely mentions the Internet. Stunningly, the ’96 overhaul was the first major overhaul of telecommunications law since 1934.
Time to get those “tubes” under control. Stay tuned for congressional meetings sure to produce some classic footage for Jon Stewart.
More importantly, the reclassification would give the commission the authority to implement portions of its recently released National Broadband Plan, as well as to enforce net neutrality.
